How to:

Install the Chameleon CMYK PDF Creator printer
on older Windows versions

Issue:

Installation scripts and driver files for the Chameleon CMYK PDF Creator printer component is not included with the Chameleon CMYK PDF Creator installer, which only installs the files needed for installing this printer component on Windows 2000 and Windows XP.

This FAQ describe how you can install the Chameleon CMYK PDF Creator printer component on the older Windows versions mentioned below under prerequisites.

Prerequisites:

  • Windows NT 4.0 (SP6), Windows 95, Windows 98 or Windows ME.
  • Adobe Acrobat 5.0 or 5.05, the full product incl. the Acrobat Distiller printer.
  • Acrobat Distiller set-up to use Press Job Options. See How to: Ensuring Successful PDF Conversion for details about this.
  • The Configure Chameleon CMYK PDF Creator utility must have been run at least once.
  • If Adobe Type Manager is installed, it must be in version 4.1 or later

Follow these steps to install the Chameleon CMYK PDF Creator printer on older Windows versions:

  • Close the Add Printer applet if it is running. If a browser window with installation instructions for Windows 2000 or Windows XP is running, close this window as well (both windows are usually opened by the Configure Chameleon CMYK PDF Creator utility when the Chameleon CMYK PDF Creator printer is not yet installed).

  • Download the latest PostScript printer driver from Adobe Systems Ltd. Currently this is the »Adobe Universal PostScript Windows Driver Installer 1.0.6«, which you can download if you click here.

  • Run the installer you just downloaded from Adobe Systems and accept the license agreement etc.
    Click Next.

  • Select the Local printer option.
If you can't activate the Local printer option you must have the system administrator perform the installation for you.
    Click Next.

  • Select the PDF Port from the list of available ports.
If you don't have a PDF Port listed you must install the Acrobat Distiller Printer that follows Adobe Acrobat 5.0 or later before you continue installation.
    Click Next.

  • Click the Browse button that opens the Browse for Printer dialog. Use this dialog to Navigate to the Driver subfolder to the folder where you installed Chameleon CMYK PDF Creator. This folder is usually:
    C:\<Program files>\Chameleon CMYK PDF Creator\Driver.
When you arrive Chameleon CMYK PDF Creator appear in the Printers list.

  • Click the OK button

  • Select Chameleon CMYK PDF Creator and click Next.
If the Add Printer Wizard suggests that you keep an existing driver, then do NOT do that. Let the existing driver be replaced and click Next.

  • Do not set a share for the Chameleon CMYK PDF Creator printer unless you have a Corporate License for Chameleon CMYK PDF Creator, since this is prohibited by the End User License Agreement for Chameleon CMYK PDF Creator, except for Corporate Licenses.
    Click Next.

  • Do not rename the Chameleon CMYK PDF Creator printer. You will definitely want a Test Page. Therefore, select the Yes option as recommended.
    Click Next.

  • Click Install.

  • Installation will start and allow you to configure Chameleon CMYK PDF Creator before the Test Page is created. It will also offer you to view the Read Me file etc. and will likely end with requesting a computer restart. Let the restart be performed if you are offered this option.

The test PDF document should normally arrive on your Desktop and open in Adobe Acrobat (depending on your Acrobat Distiller Preferences settings).

If the Test Page PDF document contain a warning note that tells you the document isn't converted to CMYK, please read the How to: Ensuring Successful PDF Conversion.

Now your  Chameleon CMYK PDF Creator printer should be fully functional and ready for use.
