Preparing the installation
Grafikhuset Publi PDF is fairly easy to install. You simply login with administrative privileges, run the installer and follow the instructions.
However, it's a quite good idea to have a few decisions made in advance. Hence, you should read this document carefully to become familiar with the installation process, which employs the following basic steps:
- Assure that you fully
understand the difference between unattended and attended queues.
Unattended queues are intended to be run as a NT Service, and attended queues
are intended to be run and by client applications with a User Interface such
as the included
PubliClient.exe.
- Decide which PostScript interpreter to use. You can choose between
e.g. Adobe Distiller (minimum version 5.05) and GPL Ghostscript 8.63 or later.
Note that license restrictions regarding Adobe Distiller may prohibit use in some contexts,
e.g. when you run Publi PDF on servers.
- Install the chosen PostScript interpreter. You cannot easily
configure Publi PDF unless you have a PostScript interpreter installed. Follow
the instructions given by the manufacturer. If you choose Ghostscript please
make sure that you have precisely one Ghostscript version installed, and that
version is the newest (currently GPL Ghostscript 8.63).
- Run the Publi PDF installer. This will install any required component for the Publi PDF
system. Do NOT install Publi PDF on a printer server. Install it on a
workstation or a file server even though corporate users connect to the Publi
PDF queues as if they are printers. See
Optimizing performance for
further details.
- Create the necessary print queues. Try to second-guess how many printer instances
you'll need. Install one instance for each queue and apply names to them that
match their purpose – each instance represent a separate Publi PDF queue. See
Component details for QueueInstaller.exe
for further details.
- Setup the configuration. Run
PubliClient.exe to configure each of the created queues. This will create
a configuration file called
»Settings.ini« in the installation folder. When created, this file can then be
edited manually as
need be.
- Start the monitors. Unattended queues require the Publi PDF NT Service component (PubliPDF.exe) and attended queues require a client application such as the Publi PDF Client component (PubliClient.exe).
Done!
Enjoy yourselves with printing from any application to any of your Publi PDF queues.
